Executive Summary

New Boots: Progressing Women in Trades is New Brunswick’s (NB) provincial network and resource hub that aims to promote, support and mentor women in non-traditional skilled trades. Facilitated by MAP Strategic Workforce Services, an-industry led non-profit organization dedicated to creating inclusive and learning cultures in NB workplaces, the program is also a resource for skilled trades employers in fields such as: construction, manufacturing, automotive, truck and transport, and forestry who are looking to recruit and retain tradeswomen in the province.

Program Value

New Boots supports girls and women through all aspects of their non-traditional skilled trade careers. As a program sponsor you will be helping to educate and support girls and women looking to explore the excellent opportunities in the NB skilled trades sector. As a partner you show your support and help to increase the number of women in non-traditional skilled trades.

Target Initiatives


Community Initiatives:

By supporting New Boots, you will help purchase (in-kind or monetary) tools, safety equipment and project materials to ensure New Boots is able to provide women and girls the opportunity to participate in:

  • In-school hands on skilled trades activities
  • 1-day skilled trades exposure camps for women and girls
  • 1-week summer carpentry camp where girls build a creative and fun structure, such as playground equipment, which is donated to a community stakeholder
  • Trades in Technology Career Exploration for Girls events where tradeswomen mentors volunteer their time to share their experience with high school girls who are looking to pursue non-traditional career paths


Employment Initiatives:

By supporting New Boots you will help grow the provincial network for women interested in skilled trades which provides:

  • Scholarships for women who are registered and accepted to pre-employment trades programs at New Brunswick colleges
  • Tools and safety equipment for women who have successfully found employment, but need some help being prepared to enter the workplace
  • Resume and interview preparation for tradeswomen who are looking to gain employment in the province
  • Research and development of standard practices for recruitment and retention of women in skilled trades
  • Social events that bring tradeswomen together to mentor, share experiences, and overcome any feelings of isolation in the workplace
  • Monthly spotlights that showcase top-notch employers and successful women working in the trades in NB
  • Educational webinars that explore and describe the apprenticeship process in NB, the NB labour market, diversity in the workplace, and many more topics relevant to the skilled trades
  • An annual Summit that brings together tradeswomen, employers and community stakeholders across the province to discuss recruitment, retention, leadership, safety, mentoring, apprenticeship, and many other aspects relevant to NB's workplaces
