Work/ Life Balance
Work/ life Balance is a term commonly used to describe the balance that a working individual needs between time allocated for work and other aspects of life (Wikipedia). These areas can include personal interests, family and social or leisure activities. In short, work/ life balance is the state of equilibrium where a person equally prioritizes the demands of one’s career and the demands of one’s personal life. Some common reasons that lead to a poor work/ life balance can be broken down into two categories and include:
- Time management and longer hours
- Too much work and increased responsibilities
- Deadlines and dependence on coworkers
- Changes in job position or career
- Family: children and aging parents
- Demands and commitments
- Finances and time management
- Tasks, chores, and extracurricular activities
There are several signs that may indicate the need to revaluate our work or home life, priorities, and commitments. Physical symptoms can include fatigue, muscle tension, upset stomach, head and backaches and the inability to fight off common illnesses. These signs also manifest themselves through our behaviors and emotions. Anxiety, lack of concentration, weight loss or gain, insomnia, easily expressing anger and over-indulging in substances such as coffee or alcohol can be indicators that an individual is nearing their breaking point.
When creating a schedule, think about the best way to achieve balance at work and in your personal life. Work/ life balance is about having the flexibility to get things done in your professional life while still having time and energy to enjoy your personal life. There may be some days where you work longer hours so you have time later in the week to enjoy other activities. These eight suggestions can be especially helpful but can also provide insight on how to be a more supportive manager.
- Prioritize your health.
- Accept that there is no ‘perfect’ work/ life balance.
- Find a job that you love.
- Make time for yourself and your loved ones.
- Don’t be afraid to unplug.
- Set boundaries and work hours.
- Set goals and priorities (and stick to them).
